Your introduction to Siena will start at the main entrance to San Domenico Church, one of the most important landmarks in Siena. This is where the relics of Saint Catherine of Siena, Italy’s patron saint, are stored, and the church also plays a significant role in Palio traditions.
We’ll stroll through Siena’s medieval centre and discuss the Contrades—the famous, historic districts of Siena—which still compete in the 400-year-old Palio horse race, an event central to the lives of the Senese. Each Contrada has its own motto, flag, and symbol, such as an owl, wolf, or dragon. As we walk, your guide will share tales of the fierce rivalries between these districts that span centuries.
At Piazza del Campo, one of the world’s most spectacular squares, we’ll reveal some of Siena’s darkest secrets and recount stories of the city’s glorious past and infamous conflicts. We’ll also discuss the Palio di Siena, the legendary horse race held here twice a year, and the vibrant pageantry that accompanies it, attracting visitors from around the globe.
Tuscan flavours
We will stop at a food shop to taste local sweet treats like ricciarelli biscuits or panforte, and then, just around the corner, we’ll reach a local Vineria. Here, we’ll raise a glass of Senese wine, paired with a delicious panino (Italian sandwich). These foodie stops are designed to provide a deeper understanding of Siena’s culture and traditions—because, in our opinion, there’s no better way to discover a culture than by eating it!
Next, we’ll head toward the hill that hosts the Gothic Cathedral of Siena, where we’ll pause to discuss the nearby Santa Maria della Scala, an ancient pilgrimage hospital. You’ll hear stories about the pilgrims who passed through its doors and the vital role it played in the city’s history.
Finally, we’ll explore other medieval alleys before returning to Piazza del Campo. This will mark the end of the tour, where we’ll bid you: Arrivederci!
