Full Description
Our tour begins in Miracle Square, where your guide will provide a fascinating introduction to Pisan history. As we stroll around the square, we’ll stop to admire and discuss its iconic landmarks: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Monumental Cemetery, and of course, the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. There will also be plenty of time to capture the perfect souvenir snapshot or ask questions about these remarkable monuments.
Next, we’ll ascend the ancient city walls of Pisa, offering a view of these spectacular monuments as the Gods might have seen them—from above. These medieval walls, which stretch for 3 km, underwent extensive renovations and reopened to the public in 2018. We’ll explore the northern section of the walls before descending to visit more historical highlights.
Did you know Pisa boasts more Romanesque churches (1000–1300 AD) than Florence or Siena? This reflects the immense power Pisa once wielded. We’ll stop to admire one or two of these architectural gems, including the charming San Francesco Church, built in 1233.
Your guide will then lead you to Cavalieri Square, where you’ll marvel at the Cavalieri Palace, now part of the prestigious University of Pisa. Nearby is the Palazzo dell’Orologio, famously tied to the tragic story of Ugolino della Gherardesca. This military leader and his family were starved to death in 1288 in the clock tower for allegedly conspiring with the Genoese, a gruesome tale immortalized in Dante’s Inferno.
After soaking in Pisa’s enthralling history and architectural wonders, it’s time to enjoy a well-deserved treat. Depending on the time of your tour:
- The morning tour includes a food tasting and a glass of wine that reflects the Pisan love for brunch-style indulgence.
- The afternoon tour focuses on the classic Italian aperitivo tradition, featuring wine or cocktails paired with local appetizers like sheep’s cheese and locally cured meats.
Buon appetito!
