Our tour begins in Miracle Square, where your guide will give you the lowdown on Pisan history. We will take a stroll around the square, stopping to admire and discuss the Cathedral, Baptistery, Monumental Cemetery, and of course, the iconic Leaning Tower. There will be plenty of time to take the perfect Leaning Tower of Pisa souvenir snapshot or ask questions.
We will then climb the ancient walls of the city to view these spectacular monuments as the Gods would have seen them, from above. The 3km walls have undergone an extensive renovation in recent years and re-opened to the public in 2018. We’ll cover the north section before descending back to earth to check out some other historic highlights.
There are more Romanesque (1000-1300 AD ) churches in Pisa than there are in Florence and Siena, an indication of the powerhouse Pisa once was. We’ll stop to admire one or two of our favourites, including the pretty San Francesco church, built in 1233.
Your guide will lead you to Cavalieri Square to admire the spectacular Cavalieri Palace (now part of the city’s sprawling University) and the Palazzo dell’Orologio, which is home to the clock tower where military leader Ugolino della Gherardesca was starved to death in 1288, alongside his family, for allegedly conspiring with the Genoese. The whole grisly episode was chronicled in Dante’s Inferno.
After hearing all about Pisa’s enthralling origin story, it’s time to enjoy a glass of something local and taste some local products. The morning version of this tour includes a food tasting and a glass of wine that reflects local Pisans’ favourite brunch options, while the afternoon version of the tour will focus on that great Italian tradition; the aperitivo (wine or cocktail with appetizers such as sheep’s cheese and locally cured meats). Buon appetito!
