Your foodie adventure begins outside the city walls, with a brief history of Lucca and its people. We will take a walk around the green haven at the top of the city walls, which has become a popular pedestrian promenade, offering up ancient urban vistas of church spires and medieval towers, as well as plenty of shady spots to shelter from the heat of the midday sun.
Our first food stop will give you the perfect introduction to breakfast, Italian style! It will be a sweet affair, that couples high quality espresso with flaky Italian pastries. We’ll talk about Italian breakfast traditions and let you in on the secrets to living like a true Italian. (In certain times of the year, breakfast can be replaced by gelato as a final stop and the local snack can be served at the pastry shop)
Our walk continues, mixing the city’s top sights with secret gems, hidden in the medieval backstreets. We’ll talk about the architecture, art and musical traditions that our city is famous for, and we will stop to see the home of one of Italy’s most prolific opera composers, Giacomo Puccini.
You will walk along the city’s main shopping street, lined with palazzos and artisan stores, and we’ll stop to take a peek inside some of our favourite gourmet shops to learn about their authentic local specialities. As we explore, we’ll remind you to look up and admire the old shop signs that hint at the city’s artisan traditions; shoemakers, silk merchants and knife grinders.
Your tour will end up with a plate of deliciously authentic antipasti, including fennel salami and pecorino cheese from the Garfagnana mountains and a glass of Lucchese wine (or craft beer), against the backdrop of the atmospheric and bustling Piazza dell’Anfiteatro.
